  • Discovery / Science Channel’s “How It’s Made” Steel Forgings episode

    Hello YouTube Friends,

In this video I sharpen “again” my Outdoor Edge Swingblade knife manufactured with AUS 8 steel. (Steel: Aichi AUS-8 Stainless Vacuum heat treatment & subzero quenched
Rockwell-C hardness: 57-58) The first time I sharpened this knife with my ceramic kit and the blade was left with a great deal of micro chipping. The second sharpening was with my Diamond stone kit. I show before and after sharpening with my USB Microscope. I have never had any issues sharpening my Cold Steel Lawman which is built with Japanese Aus 8A Stainless steel. I don’t know the difference in the AUS 8 steel but there is a difference. After the second sharpening I’m left with one small micro chip but the rest of the blade is back to razor sharp. Both knives have been stropped with Kangaroo strops and CBN Emulsion. While to the naked eye the blade may look mirror polished but once under the microscope you quickly see the remaining scratches. I don’t know if one knife is better then the other in regards to the AUS 8 but I feel the Cold Steel Lawman has a much better quality of AUS 8 steel. It could be the heat treat, the Rockwell hardness or steel supplier; I don’t know. I’d love to hear your comments. This isn’t a scientific study, just a personal observation of two knives I have sharpened, both AUS 8 Stainless Steel.
