  • Make your cottage the place to be this summer by building your own Cottage Bar Cart! Reno My Reno host, Dave Depencier, shows you how to create your own portable outdoor island for entertaining in a few easy steps.

First, pick up some lumber at your local Home Building Centre location. Dave recommends treating the lumber with some wood stain to protect the bar from the sun and weather. He uses the Beauti-Tone Wood Shield for a slight tint that preserves the original shade of the wood.

Install some wheels onto the bottom of your new island for easy mobility. The wheels should also be able to lock in place so the bar doesn’t roll when you don’t want it to.

Next, consider attaching a planter to the side of the bar. This is a great place to grow plants or herbs that can be added to your meals or mixed drinks. After placing your selection of plants into the planter, add in potting soil and mulch.

Since the island is used for entertaining, a sink with running water is the perfect finishing touch.
Ensure that the bar is properly supported and then install a small stainless steel bar sink. To have running water, simply connect a hose to the hot and cold pipes under the sink. This way, both can turn on and receive fresh water. To complete the circuit, slide a bucket under the sink to act as a drain for the excess water.

Finally, for the perfect ice bucket, construct a box out of cedar and line it with metal. Once this is complete, you can conveniently store your ice and drinks inside the bar for easy access. A small tap may be included in this area as well to drain the melted ice water.

Following these steps will ensure that your bar is ready for all summer entertaining. To begin building your own cottage bar cart, come by your local Home Building Centre location today for all of the materials you need.
