this is part 2 on tig welding low alloy high strength steel parts. it includes a review on part 1 where a 500f preheat was used to slow the cooling rate. Part 2 is the second TIG pass and a discussion of preheat and interpass temperature requirements. The interpass temp requirements for carbon and low alloy steels is different from stainless. With carbon steel and low alloy high strength steels, a minimum preheat and minimum interpass temperature is called for. With stainless, the objective is to limit the time at elevated temperatures so no preheat and a maximum preheat temp of 250 or 350f is common.
It wont hurt to let it cool a lot more on stainless steels.
Steve walks through installing a stainless steel guide rod (recoil spring rod) in a Sig Sauer P220, and discusses whether or not it qualifies as an “upgrade.”
