Tig welding aluminum using a chunk of stainless steel round stock for backing… Filling a gap in aluminum works better with backing because the backing will not only help “cast” the back side of the weld metal …but backing also helps to trap argon shielding gas.
this is a pretty wide gap and would not necessarily be a good repair for every application. But it is something I have done before to salvage a part. Tig welding repairs like this are fairly common in machine shops.
