There aren’t too many good video’s on youtube that show how to remove the hardness from a through hardened or case hardened piece of heavy steel for working in the lathe or mill.

In this video i show step by step taking the hardness out of a Semi tractor trailer king pin. why do i have it? accident jobs, they only change one if needed. and often rob the bushings from kits. so they chuck the other useless kingpin that they dont use. i have many of these. and also started to collect the brake cam shafts as they are really good steel too. they take 30k lb of twisting force or torque. and don’t bend. they are only good as long as the the bearing surface doesn’t ware too much. So i have a sustainable supply of hard, forged metal for simple projects.

I also have a never ending supply of aluminum as a waste material. but i need a forge to ustilize it. for now we scrap all the aluminum at work.
