Pure copper is a very rare find, as it is usually mixed together with other chemicals known as copper ores. There are about 15 copper ores mined all over the world. The main ones are called sulfide ores where the copper is chemically bonded with sulfur. Other Ores include, oxide ores, carbonate ores, or mixed ores. When you go to buy metal for welding you have several different options.
You’ve got angle iron, flat bar, round and square tubing, round bar, square bar, and more.
All shapes and sizes of metal are useful, but if you’re getting structural it’s nice to use and iron and tubing due to the strength.
When I’m teaching beginners to weld I typically tell them to stick with a thickness of 1/16″ to start with.
This gives them enough metal thickness so they aren’t going to burn through.
