Before purchasing this cnc I had read and listened to some machinist jibber jabber about cat40 this, bridgeport that. The way some machinist make it sound is that if you are buying an old used machine it has to have a big spindle to remove alot of metal. In the cnc forums this machine is talked about like a light duty machine that can only drill and tap little holes in aluminum. The fact is this Brother mill is a full machining center with a fantastically productive control, and it will remove way more steel in a way shorter time than an old bridgeport and it will do it more accurately. Plus it has the bonus of RIGID TAPPING INCLUDING DEEP HOLE PECK DRILLING AND TAPPING CYLCES!!! I always wondered how deep of a cut a little bt-30 machine could take. Now I know. This 20 year old Brother TC225 can cut .250 deep by 1.5 wide with a Kyocera Ultra Hurricane 2.5″ 6 insert cutter at 600sfm(1000% speed overdrive) and .004″ feed per tooth, .024″ per revolution (400% feed overdrive) IN MEDIUM CARBON STEEL(around 7 cubic inches per minute which is at least double maybe as much as four times the factory steel removal rating for the mill with a 1990s vintage face mill)!!! It can do this with only five horsepower because of both the high rigidity of the machine, the extreme shear angle of the perfectly square shoulder and bottom milling inserts of the Kyocera facemill, and of course proper cnc setup is a must. You can confirm this with the video, the first cut travels approximately five inches in fifteen seconds at .250 deep which can be verified by measuring the depth and comparing it to a known size like the 2.5″ facemill or the 100mm wide toolmakers vise.
By the way, you are seeing it with the XYZ rapids set to a max of 400 inches per minute(I set it to this because any faster and the machine is moving way to fast for me to hit the E-stop if it is about to crash, plus it scares me when it moves faster) however the machine has a max of 780ipm XY, 590ipm Z.
This 20 YEAR OLD machine has 2000 line optical differential encoders and AC servoes directly mounted to super high accuracy zero backlash ballscrews all riding on high rigidity zero lash hsr profile linear rails. I have the original calibration numbers for all axis and ballscrews and the numbers are unreal. All open source components that could be purchased from various manufacturers. However since the service and prices are so good from Yamazen, I prefer to buy from them directly.
