is a low alloy nickel, chromium, molybdenum case hardening steel,
generally supplied in the as rolled condition with a maximum hardness HB
255max. SAE steel 8620 offers high external strength and good internal
strength, making it highly wear resistant. AISI 8620 steel has a higher
core strength than grades 8615 and 8617.
SAE 8620 alloy steel is
flexible during hardening treatments, thus enabling improvement of
case/core properties. Pre hardened and tempered (uncarburized) 8620 can
be further surface hardened by nitriding but will not respond
satisfactorily to flame or induction hardening due to its low carbon
Steel 8620 is suited for applications which require a
combination of toughness and wear resistance. This grade is commonly
supplied in round bar.

5. Forging of Material 8620 Steel
8620 alloy steel is forged at a start temperature of around 2250ºF
(1230ºC) down to approximately 1700ºF(925ºC.) prior to the hardening
heat treatment or carburizing. The alloy is air cooled after forging.
6. ASTM 8620 Steel Heat Treatment
8620 steel may be given a full anneal by heat to 820℃ – 850℃, and hold
until temperature is uniform throughout the section and cool in furnace
or air cooled.
of heat treated and water quenched parts of 8620 steels (not
carburized) is done at 400 F to 1300 F to improve case toughness with
minimal effect on its hardness. This will also reduce the possibility of

(910ºC) and air cool. This is another method of improving machinability
in 8620 material; normalizing might also be used prior to case
7. Machinability of SAE 8620 Steel
8620 alloy steel is readily machined after heat treatment and/or
carburizing, should be at a minimum so as not to impair the hardened
case of the part. Machining may be done by conventional means prior to
heat treatment – after carburizing machining is usually limited to
8. Welding of 8620 Materials
alloy 8620 may be welded as rolled condition by conventional methods,
usually gas or arc welding. Preheating at 400 F is beneficial and
subsequent heating after welding is recommended – consult the approved
weld procedure for the method used. However, welding in the case
hardened or through hardened condition is not recommended
9. Application of ASTM 8620 Steel
8620 steel material is used extensively by all industry sectors for
light to medium stressed components and shafts requiring high surface
wear resistance with reasonable core strength and impact properties.
applications are: Arbors, Bearings, Bushings, Cam Shafts, Differential
Pinions, Guide Pins, King Pins, Pistons Pins, Gears, Splined Shafts,
Ratchets, Sleeves and other applications where it is helpful to have a
steel that can be readily machined and carburized to controlled case

This special edition of our best-selling and highly-acclaimed Big Freight series looks at two Class 20s in industrial use.
The steel production plant at Scunthorpe is one of the largest in the UK. Situated on a 200 acre site and with an internal railway of over 100 miles, production first began in 1890.
Today, owned by the Indian giant Tata Steel, the site produces 4.5 million tons each year, serving the construction and rail industry. Freshly rolled continuous welded rails as well as steel slabs are transported by train from the site.
This programme looks at the two Class 20 locomotives based at Scunthorpe and which are used to haul wagons between the workshops. Owned by the Harry Needle Railroad Company No.81 (20056) carries a grey and yellow livery and No.82 (20066) is painted blue and orange.
Rarely seen by the general public, our cameras were given privileged access to the site and a typical day for both locos is featured, followed by a cab ride around part of the site.
If you’re interested in industrial railways and what two veteran Class 20s get up to in a day’s work, this programme is for you!
The DVD is £12.95, or if you prefer you can select the Blu-ray format at £14.95. Please note you will need a Blu-ray player or PlayStation 3 to play a Blu-ray disc.

The impact of fake ID’s might be more harmful than you think.
By Blaine Robinson & Shana Barrios
BOULDER — To underage college students, fake ID’s are a dream come true. But in reality, these idealistic underagers might want to think twice before investing in this illegal industry.
Fake ID’s are increasing in popularity, especially among college students. In 2010, more than 1,500 fake ID’s were turned in to Boulder Police. But this statistic hasn’t done much to deter University of Colorado students from owning them.
Jacqueline Wright, a CU advertising senior, said she’s had at least eight fakes taken from her in the past.
“I’ve had one taken at the Dark Horse… one in Boston… the Sink… I’ve had like two or three taken from The Goose… they finally were just like ‘get outta here, like we know it’s not you,’” Wright said.
Molly Sauer, another CU advertising student, recalled the embarrassment that came with getting her fake ID taken away.
“I tried to play it cool, and then he said he had to bring it to the back just to scan it,” Sauer said. “He came back and said that, um, he had to put it in the manager’s fake id box because it didn’t scan. And then I was humiliated.”
Many people fail to realize the potential consequences involved with fake ID’s. For example, using fraudulent identification in Boulder can result in up to 90 days in jail, and a $500 fine.
On top of that, they affect more than just the people using them. Not only can these forged government documents jeopardize ID owners’ futures, but they can also significantly damage the lives of others.
For example, fake ID’s have the power to put restaurants and bars out of business.
“As an employee of a bar, you’re really concerned,” said Joey Landrau, Lodos bartender. “Working here is your livelihood… You do not want to lose your liquor license.”
Furthermore, the danger of fake ID’s goes beyond just using them. In fact, having an id made can be more problematic than actually using it.
Many fake ID websites require people to put in their personal information to receive one.
“It’s a pretty, ya know, scary situation at the same time because you’re putting your information out on the internet for the public to see,” Landrau went on to say. “If these sites are keeping track of this information, ya know, from these other countries who knows what they could be using it for.”
It’s not just illegal to use a fake ID. According to Carlene Hofmann,
Boulder Police’s alcohol enforcement officer, “Having possession of a forged government document is a felony.”
Having a fake ID made is considered forgery, but impersonating someone who’s 21 and using their ID is identity fraud. Both of these offenses are punishable by law.
THE EFFECTS OF FAKE ID’s:
– Can put restaurants, bars, and liquor stores out of business
– Contributes to human trafficking
– Can result in identity fraud/theft
FAKE ID’S: QUICK FACTS
– 1,598 fake ID’s turned in to Boulder PD in 2010
– Number of tickets for fake ID’s increased from 7 to 150 from 2009 to 2010
– 75% of fake ID use is someone using another person’s real driver’s license
– Using a fake ID in Boulder carries a fine of up to $500 and/or 90 days in jail
– Boulder Police say this personal information can be used to steal people’s identities,
and to traffic people into the united states from other countries.
