Energy production methods must change to achieve a low carbon future. We need to rely more on renewable sources of electricity, as well as nuclear power, and less on fossil fuels, which produce greenhouse gases when burnt. Scientists at the University of Bath, and colleagues at 9 universities are examining different pathways to a low carbon future. These include a market-led pathway, a pathway where governments intervene, and a scenario where local councils and individuals produce their own electricity. This research uses horizon scanning to monitor trends in energy production, and reassesses the best ways to decarbonise our energy production.
