In this video I make Galinstan, a metal alloy that is liquid at room temperature. It’s made of gallium, indium, and tin at a particular ratio – 68.5% Ga, 21.5% In, 10% Sn.
Gallium: 85.5 F
Indium: 314 F
Tin: 450 F
Final Alloy: -2.2 F
It’s particularly interesting that the alloy’s melting point is much lower than the melting point of each of the components – you would think it would be somewhere more around the average value of the ingredients’ melting points.
My ultimate goal is to make a non-toxic substitute for mercury metal. This particular alloy tends to wet everything, so it’s not quite there yet. I’ll do some more experiments of different alloy compositions in the future.
