  • Traumatic injury is a major contributor to premature mortality in Australia, accounting for 50% of deaths in children and 75% of deaths in adolescents and
young adults. The single most common cause of trauma is road traffic accidents, accounting for 40% of all deaths in the 15 to 25 year age group.

Mortality rates associated with trauma increase with remoteness, being 3.6 times higher in very remote areas. The trauma mortality of Indigenous people is nearly 4 times greater than that for non-Indigenous people.

For every death from injury, there are 31 hospital admissions and 144 emergency department attendances. In addition, traumatic injury can have catastrophic physical, psychological and economic consequences for survivors and families. The time taken to reach definitive care is the most significant predictor of trauma survival. Geographic isolation is obviously an important factor in higher levels of mortality and morbidity; but improvements in the delivery of appropriate intervention have the potential to reduce those rates.

This program focuses on the skills required for a more timely and effective response to trauma in rural and remote Australia: skilful triage and assessment; appropriate consultation with medical services; emergency management on the ground; arrangements for timely retrieval; and preparation of patients for transfer.
